Lucy Teare is a British contemporary artist whose work explores the moments that exist between people. A glance across a room. A hand almost touching. The split second before something changes.
Working instinctively, Lucy deliberately avoids giving her paintings a fixed narrative. Faces are often obscured and moments left unresolved, inviting the viewer to bring their own memories, experiences and interpretations to the work.
Her current series, Flirting™, explores attraction, tension and intimacy through timeless, cinematic scenes that could belong to almost any era. The works are entirely created as diptychs, with each canvas offering one side of a story and revealing something new when brought together.
For Lucy, the conversation around a painting is part of the work itself. Who are they? What just happened? What happens next? Only the viewer can answer. And as they change, the painting can change with them, revealing something different in ten years’ time than it does today.
